FAQs

Q: How are your motorbike plates made?
A: We have a team of twelve dedicated specialists that carefully hand-craft each motorcycle number plate we produce to ensure unrivalled quality. With over 275 years of combined experience, you’re in good hands.
Q: Are your motorbike plates simple to fit?
A: Fitting your new bike plate is simple and we do offer fitting kits if required which can be purchased at checkout. For full information on fitting your new plate, check out our bike plate fitting page.
Q: Do I need a front facing number plate on my motorcycle as well as a rear plate?
A: Motorcycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the bike. If your bike was registered before then you can display a motorcycle plate on the front, but this is not a legal requirement in the UK.
Q: How do I care for my motorcycle plate?
A: Our motorcycle plates are very low maintenance. However, in the UK it’s deemed an offence to have a number plate that doesn’t show your registration clearly and things like mud and dust can obscure the view of your number plate. Ensure you regularly wash your plate to ensure you’re in-keeping with the law. You can use a pressure washer to clean your bike plate.

4D Plate FAQs

Q. What are 4D (raised) number plates?
4D plates go through an additional hand-build stage. Solid black acrylic characters are laser-cut and professionally bonded onto the face of a finished plate, so they stand proud of the surface for a sharper, more purposeful look.
Q. How deep are the laser-cut characters?
Ours are 3mm deep. We find that is the sweet spot: enough depth for a strong side-on profile, while staying easy to keep clean. Deeper 5mm characters catch more road dirt and are harder to wash properly.
Q. Are 4D plates road legal?
Yes, provided you choose legal plates in the builder. Under BS AU 145e, which has applied to plates fitted since 1 September 2021, the characters must be a single shade of black. Raised characters are permitted; it is colour and two-tone finishes that are not. Our 4D legal plates are made to the standard and carry the required BS AU 145e marking and supplier details.
Q. What happens if a raised character gets damaged?
The laser-cut characters are bonded on top of a plate that is already fully legal and correctly printed underneath. So if a raised character is knocked or damaged, the registration underneath is still readable and still compliant. Not every supplier builds them that way.

3D Gel Plate FAQs

Q. What are 3D gel number plates?
3D gel plates have a clear polyurethane resin dome applied over each printed character. The resin cures to a raised, rounded, high-gloss finish, giving a softer and more curved look than the sharp edges of laser-cut 4D.
Q. Do you sell 3D gel plates?
Yes. 3D Gel is one of the three text styles in our builder, alongside Printed and 4D Plate. Choose it under Text Style and the price updates as you build.
Q. Are 3D gel plates road legal?
Yes, when the characters are a single shade of black and the plate is made to BS AU 145e. Choose legal plates in the builder and that is what you get. What is not road legal is coloured, carbon-effect or two-tone gel: the standard requires single-shade black characters, so those are for show use only.
Q. Should I choose 3D gel or 4D?
Both are road legal when built as legal plates, so it comes down to the look you want. 3D gel gives a rounded, glossy dome. 4D gives a crisp, square-edged laser-cut character with a stronger shadow line from the side. 4D is the deeper of the two.
Q. How do I look after a raised plate?
Much the same as any plate. Keep it clean so the registration stays clearly visible, which is a legal requirement in its own right, not just good practice. Our plates are water and sun-fade resistant and can be cleaned with a pressure washer.
